Hi friends!

Friends, I am so sorry about my recent lack of effort in creating this for you. Last week, I prioritized sending a high-quality product but at a later date. Today, I give you a low-quality product on the day I told you I would. I’m not even editing this one because I want it to come out before midnight. I’m the kind of person that cannot give myself slack because if I do, I will not return to my previous prime. Because of that, I give you a diary-style stream of consciousness.

Every English teacher told me to show, not tell. But I’m telling you now: the main takeaway of this entry is the immense amount of privilege I have and how poorly I would probably do in an apocalypse (or maybe that’s what I want you to think).

Return to office

As we all are at the start of the year, I am at a transition. In the endless search for self-optimization, I’ve had an unconventional start to my year, which is pretty conventional for most people — getting up early, working out, and working hard after. I’m both really good and really bad at this.

I wrote about my friend Aimee when I watched her run the New York City Marathon last year. When she told me she wanted to try my gym, we had such a great time working out that she got a membership. I love having a friend to work out with, and I haven’t had that in a few months. Only one compromise: Aimee likes to work out in the morning. Like early in the morning. The earliest I would get up for the gym was 9 a.m….when I lived in New Hampshire and had work in the afternoon.

Last Wednesday(? maybe?), I set my 7:05, 7:10, and 7:15 alarms to get my a** out of bed. I hopped on a metaphorical conveyor belt I don’t feel like I’ve gotten off of yet. I walked to the gym as the sun rose. I felt like I was on a drug, nearly euphoric to have unlocked the secret of mornings. I listened to a f****** podcast on my walk! I never listen to those! This one was actually educational!

I did a whole arms and abs before an entire day of work. I felt a lil’ crash in the middle of the day. I went to bed before midnight, which deviated from my norm of 1-2 a.m. The next day, I did the same thing. Talk about building a routine! After never getting up this early to gym it out, I did it two days in a row.

I felt myself getting more done at my job, which is more necessary than usual. The company I work for undergoing a merrrrgerrr and my duties are changing, most notably for this transition period. I’ve been a bit nervous about it. I want to make a good impression on my new colleagues and seem like a competent person.

After a rambunctious weekend, I found myself in bed before midnight in preparation for today. For the first time, I went into the office I newly can work at, which is a big upgrade from my various WeWorks. I hopped on my L stop with the other fake hipsters, those who wear leather at night but blazers during the day. I traversed to the very bottom of Manhattan then more than 20 floors up a skyscraper.

The office has panoramic views of the whole city. It’s gorgeous. I do not have much time to take in the views. It’s go-go-go getting used to all of these new systems. You ever have one of those work days that gets harder as it goes on? I’m locked into my laptop, save for a moment for lunch. I realized my friend Ryan worked down the street, so we got Chipotle. FiDi is so…FiDi…that I went to the wrong Chipotle and had to meet him at the right one, which was a four minute walk away.

Today was a mix of exhausting and exhilarating. I remember my boss at my last job asked me what my career goal was now that I didn’t want to be a journalist, and I responded that, although I didn’t know what I would be doing, I wanted to be staring out of a floor-to-ceiling skyscraper window at the New York skyline. I achieved that dream today!

But, girl, I am tired. So tired that my dose of humor in this entry is to say Girl, I am tired. I’m barely a week into being an adult and am already so done with it. I even had a youthful weekend of apartment hunting and partying! And I’m in office for the rest of the week…I’m so done after just one day?

I never know if I’m being too hard or too easy on myself. It’s a gorgeous mix. My commute home is one people take every single day, and I zoned out like the rest of them. I don’t have anything profound to say about the mundanity. I am just so tired.

The luck doesn’t end there — I come home to my girlfriend cooking me dinner. Wow. And she is a great cook! Honey, I’m home! Like every ‘50s man, I was dead behind the eyes. I understood every selfish husband in that moment. I needed a few minutes to sit before I could return to myself and converse like a normal person with Meera.

I’ve been feeling both inspired and uninspired. I’ve had less mental space to write here, but I’m also doing all of these productive things I’ve written about wanting to do. I’m extra exhausted because I don’t see an end in sight yet. I wonder if I’ll ever see a friend again, if I’ll ever frolic through a field again, if I’ll ever return to childhood, learn to read, learn to walk, breathe!

I used to feel this way when I lived in New Hampshire and worked in person every day. It took me a whole year to adjust to that version of adulthood, and I envied my peers who trotted through New York without a care in the world. It’s weird existing as someone with both of those parts now.

I’m not even reading this over before sending it. If you’re strung up on resolutions and goals for the new year, you’re doing good just by breathing. I thought about doing an ins/outs but making an in/out list is already OUT in 2024.

Despite its needless meandering, I’m happy about this entry because it will either show the beginning of my metamorphosis…or an off week.

10 resolutions/things I want to do this year

  1. Floss every day. I just don’t do this and should. Sorry.

  2. Learn to cook. Not everyone gets their meals cooked by their beautiful girlfriend. Time to rejoin the plebes.

  3. Stop saying I’m gonna kill myself after every minor inconvenience. I love exaggerating, but this isn’t cool. A lot of people still do this, but I think it’s out in 2024.

  4. Take an in-person class. I’m not talking fitness. I mean something like Spanish, voice acting, comedy, something somehow more upsetting than comedy…

  5. Go to the Hamptons. Last year’s was a very Rockaway summer. For 2024, let’s upgrade to something more G…L…A…M……O…R…O-U-S.

  6. Do a live Peloton class with my mom. I mean this as a compliment: I don’t have a hard time impressing my mom when she comes to town. As a Peloton zealot, she deserves something especially special — taking a live class at Peloton Studios right here in New York.

  7. Be in the studio audience for something fun. A few years ago, Meera and I were at the second-to-last filmed episode (not knowing so) of The Wendy Williams Show. I would like to see Kelly Clarkson, SNL, or Watch What Happens Live.

  8. Perform publicly. I don’t really know what that means. Singing to a non-karaoke crowd but it not being cringe is as likely as Ford models calling me up to walk in a show for NYFW.

  9. Eat at Lucali. Lucali is one of those hard-to-get restaurants in the city. My friend Leah pitched a day where most of it is spent waiting for and getting a table. I envision lots of wine and pizza (classy version) in my future.

  10. Get a view of Central Park in a non-touristy way. Which billionaire do I need to befriend to be high up enough in a building along Central Park to get a full view? Knowing me, I’d probably have better luck finding one of the unlucky few living in 432 Park.

This week’s photo is from my immediate exit from work tonight. Peep the turtleneck, scarf, and little gold hoops. The beanie keeps me Bushwick.

Want to write here?

I’ve gotten a lot of you telling me how much my newsletter has inspired you to pick up writing for fun again (and thank you for telling me!). I want to give you an opportunity to bring some of that writing to a slightly public sphere.

Introducing the Guest Entry Pitch Form! If you have an idea for something you want to write about, send it in through this page I just made. Again, this is just telling me what you want to write about — not an entire entry. I’ll email you and we can work out its kinks.

I was planning on advertising this new slot anyway, and my frazzled-ness today only amplifies my desire for it to work out. You don’t have to be a professional at all, and I will help edit whatever you write!

Current fixations I want to mention

Food & Drink

As a shock to probably no one, I grew up an extremely picky eater. Chicken nuggets and fries for life, but that can’t be all there is. I’ve  broadened my palette immensely since then, and I have a few foods for which I hold an intense love — not just because of their taste, but because of the doors they opened to a strange little girl. Cheeseburgers are one of these meals. You’d think my favorite burger in New York would be one I searched for desperately and paid more than enough money to eat, but you’d be wrong: it’s 7th Street Burger. My roommates and I used to get them after nights out on the Upper East Side, but the local chain’s power stretches beyond the desires of the wandering drunk. The burger itself is simple, almost like a Five Guys burger, but it deviates in size. The 7th Street Burger burger is nearly a European portion, enough to fill you up without making you sick. The majority of my burger consumption involves feasting before tapping out for the night, maybe staying close to the bathroom. This burger does not take me out of commission, especially the single patty. I finally went to the Williamsburg location this week on my way to a party, and the chain is proof that restaurants do not need frills to succeed when quality speaks for itself.

Music

I’m doing a drag queen song. This week was the premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 16, and I cannot get this song from the episode out of my head. For this first episode, the queens performed in a talent show as their first impression for the judging panel. I cannot stop watching Mirage lipsync and dance to this…untitled original song? Not sure. Is it a fully formed song? Not really. Do I care? Not at all. This is the perfect song. I’ll put your man on a leash, ‘cuz all men are dogs while she is pulled by an imaginary dog then struts? More. The way she says Yeah, the boys all know like she’s mid-giggle. It comes from an infrequently used part of the throat. I can't stop thinking about the following lines: She’s such a b*tch/ What a b*tch/ She’s such a b*tch/ ‘Cuz I’m not that nice and I’m not your sis. Guys, I really cannot grasp why this song has such a chokehold on me. Her heel-clacking performance, the way she flops about the runway, I am so lucky to live in a timeline where I can eat up mindless non-songs like this. She’s gorgeous, and I am obsessed with her.

Internet & Pop Culture

This may be from a few months ago, but this is a video I love. This TikTok parodying that one time Beyonce stared at someone videotaping her at a concert has endless replay value. Something about the video’s professionalism yet clearly low production value. The girl’s acting. The confusion. The eyes. It’s everything. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. Give it a watch! She ain’t no divaaaaaaa!

Television & Maybe Movies

I do not have a ton of experience with Anime. That said, when I’m sucked into an Anime, I’m fully there. Meera told me to watch the show that mystifies middle schoolers and adults alike: Death Note. Meera maintains that most people our age have a working knowledge of the show’s premise, which I disagree with based on how John Hughes-y my high school was. Anyway, Death Note is about a god of death’s book entering the human world, and the boy that picks it up can now kill people by writing their names in the book. This show is 37 episodes that are around 20 minutes long, so it’s a hard-and-fast puzzle where you watch how the boy, Light Yagami, (yes, that’s his name. I thought at first there would be a Dark Yagami?) uses and tries to keep the Death Note(book). The show kept me on the edge of my seat, and I loved almost every minute of it. I think the show takes a turn for the worse when some of the characters are in custody because the focus shifts further into the ensemble than on Light, but I understand why the show did this. It feels like three different shows in one, and I wasn’t fully satisfied with its ending. I found myself rooting for Light despite him killing lots of people, similarly to my affinity for Tony Soprano. The show unfortunately does not pass the Bechdel test, and there are lots of questionable/upsetting romantic moments. Based on Light’s primary foes, I think the show is — if this is a position someone can take — pro-autism because of how respected these characters are. Take my word for it, but I know those who have watched would agree with me. I recommend this show to anyone who needs a quick binge of something both easy to consume and dramatic to watch.

Journalism & Literature

I keep thinking back to this piece from New York Magazine called “The Age Gappers” about people in age gap relationships. It’s comprehensive: various gaps, various lifestyles, all of them saying they’re happy. Statistics, anecdotes, pros, cons…but my favorite are the pictures. All of the couples are pictured sitting together in their beds. It looks a bit humiliating, no? But I’m happy this exists for me to pour over. I’ve watched friends have both great loves and upsetting arrangements with partners much older or younger than them. I cannot imagine having a deep, romantic relationship with someone at least three years younger than me or two years older than me, but what do I know about anything?

Something I Saw in the Wild

Meera and I are amazing friends and went apartment hunting for our West Coast friends that are trying to move here. We went to the one and only Manhattan Valley on a day that eventually threw wind and snow at us. We went to two open houses. The first apartment was fine but not enough of a standout for the girls. The second apartment seemed promising, as it was a block from Central Park but not wildly expensive. Meera and I buzz and call the realtor to no response. A tenant in another room let us in while she reentered the building alongside her big, fluffy dog wearing a pink raincoat (the dog wore this). We walk up the four flights to an apartment with the door unlocked and deadbolt keeping it open. The apartment has no furniture, people, or light. The lights do not work. I have a 4 minute, 56 second video of Meera and I debating “touring” it then showing it around for my friends to watch later. Highlights include the near total darkness, extremely moldy toilet, and fridge jetting so much across the kitchen that one must sidestep to get through. I don’t think any spirits possessed me during that tour.
